You seem to REALLY want to do addition before subtraction. They're actually just the opposites of the same operation. You do whichever you encounter FIRST working from left-to-right.

Let's rewrite the last steps of that problem:

36 - 16 + 6 = (+36) + (-16) + (+6)

Now what would you do first?

Hopefully you chose (+36) + (-16)

....different signs -- subtract to find the difference:   36 - 16 then add on the six.
